"Playa Mzunte" cropped image, painting by Ingrid AlvarezSpending an afternoon with Ingrid Alvarez is like a breath of fresh air. Her ebullient nature is infectious. Her studio space one day can be filled with rehearsal material and costumes for a cabaret show or jazz gig, another day you could be navigating strings of hung photos an drawings imbibing the smell of linseed oil as she preps her canvas.

But her Seattle studio, like her art is an ecclectic mix of the many cultures she loves. Travel has had a significant impact on her work. The artist has a life-long goal to continue documenting her journeys abroad through her painted works.

One such trip that brought to the surface her travels is her recent collection of paintings of Mexico. This Winter 2005 trip is the basis of a "Memoir de Mexico" motif she hopes to expand beyond these three early pieces.

"I think I'll always be waiting for the day I can begin to complete my life long adventures of traveling for art. But that's the fun, this will take a life-time."
--Ingrid Alvarez

Ingrid Alvarez McNeeleyQ: Do you consider "travel" as a metaphor for traveling through different modes of art?
A: Ooh, well I've always been drawn to seeing and experiencing different cultures. I really see travel as something that runs parallel to my work informing it. I think I'll always be waiting for the day I can begin to complete my life long adventures of traveling for art. But that's the fun, this will take a life-time.

Q: Do you hope to carry your "travel-log" art to social commentary?
A: I think it's still early in my painting and mixed-media career. I think they serve as postcards or letters to friends to let them know just how special this trip or that trip was. Politics is not something I've focused on, instead I look for an emotional connection with the subject matter. I dunno, this give me something else to think about.

Q: What specifically made you seek these forms in your "Memoir de Mexico" series? In Mexico at that time, I used it to clear my head about work, personal matters and stuff. The surroundings in Mexico took shape to me over time, as a pure reflection of human life and existence among the unknown. I mean I was a stranger there and while things were familar say like a house, that house had a quality and specificity to it that made me feel that I was in Mexico, and away from my home in Seattle.

The arts in Mexico for Ingrid are alive in these forms and more. Her internalization of that trip can be seen in the soft gloss of palm leaves, a hiding surfboard or kindred connection of a painter en la calle.
