self-portrait | autoretrato by Ingrid AlvarezAt the University of Washington, I took Art History 309, a Survey of Modern Art which exposed me to many of the Art styles that developed in the 20th. Century. As part of the class, which was filled with not only Art History majors, but also studio majors like myself. Our first assignment was to analyze our society's relationship to Modern Art and our own work as it relates to those new modes of expression of the 20th. Century.

Here, I revisit a portion of my paper where I was asked the question, "How do you see your work in relation to a 20th. Century style?"

This is the beginning of my solid academic exposure to 20th Century art with the Survey of Modern Art, better known as Western Art. Prior Art History 309, I also took a class called Art & Anarchy, which focused on Modern Art and its different periods of rebellious artwork in response to political, social and economical events throughout history, specifically the Dada period.

I have also studied various other art history courses here at the University of Washington. Among those classes were Pacific Northwest Coastal Native American history and the Survey of Asian Art.

Both courses focused on the 20th. Century artwork in these categories during the latter portion of each course.
